Presentation

The mathematics-physics double degree (DDMP), as its name suggests, gives two bachelor's degrees to students who have followed both mathematics and physics courses. This double diploma gives graduates a bi-disciplinary education, opening the door to masters degrees in both fields, or even bi-disciplinary masters degrees at the frontiers of the two disciplines. Even if you decide to leave one of the two disciplines, either during the double diploma or once you've obtained your double degree, the knowledge you've acquired will inform the one you've decided to focus on. Nevertheless, the total time commitment of around 1950 hours (a bachelor's degree alone is 1500 hours) represents a considerable amount of work. If you want to continue your studies, it's important to present the best possible file. In particular, it's better to have good results by concentrating your efforts on a single license than average results in DDMP.

Program

Course of studies

The double degree program comprises a mathematics track and a physics track. These disciplinary tracks are made up of courses belonging to just one of the two tracks, or common to both. These two tracks can only be taken by students admitted for a double degree. The courses, ECTS, timetables and assessment procedures for these two pathways are given each year in the assessment procedure files available on the Université d'Orléans website. For information, the courses offered in the two programs in 2024-2025 are given in the appendix. Access to the next year requires validation of each course. In the event of failure, and barring special circumstances (long-term illness, etc.), students must return to a single degree program. In particular, AJAC status is not possible.
The commission may also advise a student who has validated both courses to join a single license.
As far as possible, timetables will enable students to take courses in both licenses. Examination timetables will be organized in such a way as to enable students to sit the relevant exams both in the first session and in the make-up session (or 2nd chance).

Obtaining the DDMP

Each semester, 30 ECTS must be obtained to validate each course.
The same rules of compensation between modules, in force for all bachelor's degrees, are calculated within each course. For validation purposes, the mathematics and physics courses are independent. Validation of a semester in the DDMP requires an average of 10/20 in each of the two courses, with no compensation between the mathematics and physics courses.
Annual validation is either by validation of each of the two semesters of the year, or by annual compensation of each subject course. Once again, there is no compensation between courses. The annual grade for a course is given by the unweighted average of the semester averages for that course.
A student who has validated both courses over the 3 years obtains both the mathematics and physics bachelor's degrees.

Admission

Admission requirements

The DDMP is a selective license. Access is subject to the decision of an access and monitoring committee. The committee is made up of the heads of the mathematics and physics bachelor's degrees, as well as the directors of studies.
The DDMP is open in S1 via Parcoursup, and in S2 only to students from the Mathematics-Physics portal. Students must apply in accordance with the procedures specified by the L1 Science Portal Management.
In L2 and L3, access for students from other streams is by application after validation of prior learning for the 2 tracks. Students must apply and submit a
cover letter and transcripts to licence.physique@univ-orleans.fr and secretariat-maths.st@univ-orleans.fr
The list of students admitted to enroll in DDMP is sent to the Registrar's Office. Admitted students, if they still wish to register for both bachelor's degrees at the same time, pay the registration fees for both bachelor's degrees, one as a primary registration, the other as a secondary registration (with no impact on their course of study). Students then enroll in both licenses following the DDMP pathway.

Further studies

The double degree in Mathematics and Physics (DDMP) is not, in principle, a career path. Students generally continue their studies with a Master's degree in Mathematics or Physics, or an engineering school.

The DDMP opens the way to research careers via the Masters in Mathematics and Physics, but it is also a good alternative to the CPGE for access to the competitive entrance exams of the Grandes Ecoles and therefore to engineering careers.

It is also possible to reorient yourself towards a Masters in Teaching (MEEF) in Mathematics or Physics.
